Self awareness has been identified as one of the most critical attributes for successful leaders.
Leaders with self awareness can recognize their thoughts and emotions, understand how they are affected by them and understand the impact they have on others.
Developing self-awareness gives leaders the opportunity to honestly and accurately explore areas of strength and weakness resulting in greater opportunities for growth and self-improvement. Leaders with self-awareness are more likely to seek and receive feedback as a positive experience that creates opportunities for growth.
With self-awareness, leaders are less likely to react to unconscious thoughts and feelings and more likely to make conscious, effective, informed decisions.
Stephen Covey, founder of the Covey Leadership Centre, and author of The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People wrote
“Self-awareness enables us to examine our paradigms – the lenses through which we see the world – to think about our thoughts, to become aware of our social scripting, and to enlarge the separation between stimulus and response.”
