Frequently Asked Questions

Below are common questions and answers about using this web site. You can also learn more about the BC Corrections Leadership Model. If you need more information, please contact us.

What if I know of a course or resource that I think would benefit other leaders, how can I share it on the site?

If you come across something that you have seen, listened to, read or taken simply fill out a brief suggestion form and let us know about it. There is a place for you to describe what it is you are recommending and a chance for you to tell us how you feel this is relevant to not only your development but others as well.

Who do I contact if I want to give feedback?

We have a web form that will allow you to submit your comment/question.

How do I let someone know I am interested in attending a recommended course?

There is a form that will allow you to indicate your interest in any of the scheduled face to face courses. Not all courses are available all the time and you should refer to the list of scheduled courses to see which ones are available. You will also be required to let your supervisor know of your interest.

What if I want to take a course that is not listed but I feel like it would benefit my leadership development?

Let your supervisor know about your interest and why you think this course would benefit your development. Also, use our contact form to let us know what the course was like and if you think others would benefit.

What happened to the Leadership Development Model? Why the change?

As you may remember, there used to be a Leadership Development Program on the ACTS site. This program was reviewed, and it was determined that the content was focussed primarily on supervisory and management skills rather than leadership competencies. The information in the Leadership Development Model was focussed on operational and organizational requirements for specific positions. A decision was made to rename the old model to Corrections Supervisor and Management Essentials and to then develop this new site, Leadership Development, that focuses strictly on how you can grow and develop your leadership skills.

How do my courses get tracked?

Any scheduled course that is taken through this site will be captured through ELM. It will become part of your permanent training record.

If it is an independent learning, skill-building topic or resource that you have invested time in, you are encouraged to keep track of your progress independently. It is also recommended that you use this information and see it is an opportunity to engage with your supervisor about these topics.

How can I find the newest courses or resources on the site?

The front page of this site lists the most recently added courses and resources. Across the site content is organized under the three main leadership topic areas:

  • Personal Leadership
  • Relational Leadership
  • Organizational Leadership

and within each area, by specific topics. One way to explore the site is via topic area as linked from the front page but also anywhere in the site from the Leadership area menu.

Leadership area menu with 3 submenus for Personal, Relational, Organizational- the Personal Leadershop menu is select to show the topics within it.

The Recommended Courses page provides an overview of the newest added courses, but separated out into the scheduled face to face courses vs the Independent Learning ones which can be accessed at any time online or from downloaded materials.

I’ve expressed an interest in the core leadership courses at the JIBC, how can I use the Leadership Model while I’m waiting to be enrolled in face to face courses?

The Leadership Model is designed to facilitate self-directed learning on leadership topics. Exploring the additional resources section of the Leadership Model will provide you with access to an inventory of material related to leadership topics that may be of interest as a component of your leadership development.

The Leadership Model also offers online learning opportunities which are available to all managers at any time. You can also explore recommended leadership training offered through the PSA and enroll through the Learning Centre.

The Leadership Model also offers the opportunity to participate in group coaching sessions dedicated to BC Corrections Managers. Details of coaching topics and upcoming dates can be found on the Leadership Model site.

My leadership panel report recommended I seek coaching. What are the benefits of coaching and what are my options?

The Leadership Model offers dedicated Group Coaching sessions for BC Corrections Managers. Group coaching is a process that brings together a small group of managers from across BC Corrections focused on a common topic for:

  • Identifying and setting goals
  • Deepening awareness around key issues
  • Taking relevant and timely action
  • Establishing a process of accountability to achieve goals
  • Sharing, growing and promoting continuous learning
  • Building trust, meaningful relationships and a sense of community

The group coaching process is led by a skilled BC Public Service Coach whose role is to maximize the combined energy, experience, and wisdom of individuals who have chosen to join the group. The coach’s approach helps group members achieve their individual goals through reflection, collaborative learning, action, and accountability.

Dedicated group coaching for BC Corrections allows our managers to benefit from the coaching experience while building a community of practice and increasing provincial exposure.

My leadership panel report suggested that I work on “how” I perform as a leader. How can I use the Leadership Model to build my skills in these areas?

Often this type of feedback from the Leadership Panel reflects a need to develop strengths in Personal and Relational Leadership. It suggests that an individual has exhibited strength in the tasks and job duties associated with their role and can now focus on developing their leadership persona and relationships with others. Exploring content in both Personal and Relational categories will support Leadership Panel recommendations in this area.
